Mount Isa Mines Tailings Reprocessing Project - Expressions of Interest
Glencore welcomes Expressions of Interest for the reprocessing or repurposing of the Mount Isa Mines Tailings Storage Facility (MIM TSF).
The MIM TSF has been operational since 1958 and will continue to be operated. The MIM TSF presents a unique opportunity to reprocess the large volume of material containing residual metals and minerals.
Spanning 1,500 hectares, the MIM TSF is one of Australia’s largest tailings storage facilities by footprint. The source of tailings are the site’s copper concentrator and zinc-lead concentrator, which have processed ore from a multitude of orebodies from six different mines, in addition to treating slag from the site’s copper smelter.
The tailings contain metal and mineral value, both in unrecovered core metals (Zn, Cu, Pb and Ag), and in previously un-targeted material such as cobalt, pyrite, dolomite, fine sand and silt.
A successful reprocessing project has the potential to recover valuable metals and minerals and strengthen sustainability in mining practices while creating opportunities for the region.
The key objectives of the project:
- Development of a solution which enables the economic recovery of metals and minerals by promoting sustainable mining practices, mutually benefitting both parties, which in turn has the beneficial effect of reducing rehabilitation.
- Attract technological expertise through the application of existing or innovation of new technologies to recover valuable metals and minerals from existing tailings.
- Meet commitments to the social transition plan through increasing investment alternatives for the project and the region.
Expressions of Interest
We invite interested parties to submit a Proposal for the development of a reprocessing project of up to 10 pages that includes:
- Capability and experience: Detail your company’s relevant experience and capabilities in tailings reprocessing.
- Financial robustness: Demonstrate the financial stability of your organisation and outline your financing approach for this project.
- Technology: Describe the technology you intend to utilise or develop for recovering valuable metals and minerals from the tailings.
- Contribution: Provide examples of previous collaborations that highlight your ability to deliver the project and outline your proposed contribution (resources) to the project.
- Additional key reasons: Include any other pertinent information that supports your proposal and illustrates why your organisation is well-suited for this project.
Submissions
All EOI submissions must be received by 5pm (AEST), Friday 3 October 2025.
Please send your submission to Brisbane.MIMTailings@glencore.com.au.
Project timeline
Following the review of EIO submissions, a shortlist of potential parties will be created. Shortlisted parties will gain access to further information and have the opportunity to provide a more detailed submission.
