Glendell Continuation Project - Protest Activity

Media statement
Sydney, Australia

The protest today is a repetition of claims made previously to the Independent Planning Commission (IPC) who are considering the approval of the Glendell Continued Operations Project. In both the assessment of the project and in submissions to the IPC, Glencore has refuted these claims.

Glencore has undertaken five years of planning, investigation and consultation in developing the Glendell Continued Operations Project, particularly matters related to Ravensworth Homestead.

A detailed review was undertaken on the period of extended conflict between European colonisers and Aboriginal people from 1825 to the middle of 1827 to investigate claims by representatives of the Plains Clan of the Wonnarua People (PCWP) that a massacre of Aboriginal people took place on Ravensworth Estate including the project area.

These investigations have shown that:

  • Sadly, a massacre of Aboriginal people took place on 2 September 1826.  However, this occurred outside the project area and more than 20 kilometres from the Ravensworth Homestead.
  • This massacre occurred more than six years before the Ravensworth Homestead was built in 1832.

A thorough Aboriginal cultural heritage assessment was undertaken for the project, involving Registered Aboriginal Parties (RAPs) and Knowledge Holders including the PCWP.

The PCWP claims are not shared by other Aboriginal groups consulted with for the project.
