4WD and vehicle recovery training: Ensuring safety in the field
In the demanding and often unpredictable terrain where Mount Isa Mine’s Environment team operates, preparation is paramount. Recognising the necessity for robust training, the organisation has mandated a bi-annual 4WD and Vehicle Recovery Training course. This half-day course is not merely a box-ticking exercise but a crucial component of the Environment team's safety management system.
The training course ensures that all members are proficient in handling 4WD vehicles and equipped to manage vehicle recovery in challenging conditions. The course includes practical, hands-on experience and theoretical knowledge, focusing on:
- 4WD handling techniques: Navigating difficult terrains such as mud, sand, and rocky landscapes.
- Vehicle recovery skills: Using recovery equipment safely and effectively, and knowing when and how to apply different recovery methods.
- Safety protocols: Ensuring that all actions taken during vehicle recovery are conducted safely to avoid injury or further complications.

The goal of this bi-annual training is not only to comply with safety regulations but to instil a sense of confidence and preparedness in each team member. By the end of the course, participants are expected to demonstrate proficiency in 4WD vehicle operation under adverse conditions, execute vehicle recovery operations safely and effectively.
As Mitch emphasises, “…our ultimate aim is to ensure that everyone gets to return home safely at the end of the day. This training is an indispensable part of achieving that goal.”
The successful completion of the recent training session underscores Mount Isa Mines's dedication to maintaining the highest safety standards and preparing its teams for the demanding tasks they undertake. Through ongoing education and practical experience, we continue to prioritise the health and safety of our employees.
