Symphony Under the Outback Stars

Glencore is proud to have supported the Mount Isa Community Ensembles (MICE) to stage the orchestral performance – Symphony Under the Outback Stars – in the spectacular, dusty, red Mount Isa outback, providing a unique instrumental production.

Hosted at the Mount Isa Campdraft Grounds on 9 October this year, the night featured about 150 students, community members and professional musicians with the evening culminating with the symphony composed by Mount Isa’s very own Isaac Glover.

150 students and community members performed the symphony composed for the evening by Mount Isa’s Isaac Glover.

Isaac, who attended the local Spinifex College in Mount Isa and went on to study at the Conservatorium of Music, was commissioned to write the symphony finale.

A range of musical pieces were performed on the night by the MICE stage band and choirs including the flexi ensemble, a primary school string orchestra and concert band, and a high school string orchestra and concert band.

  • Students attended professional development workshops leading up to the event.
  • Students from many primary schools joined together to form the Primary Strings group.

The Glencore Community Assistance Program supported the symphony evening with funding for a series of professional development workshops leading up to the event.

The professional development series saw budding brass, woodwind, percussion and strings musicians getting practical advice, encouragement, tips and support from conductor Warwick Tyrrell throughout the year, concluding with the ultimate performance in Symphony Under the Outback Stars.

The Secondary Concert Band performed a range of musical pieces throughout the evening.

Queensland Metals General Manager Health, Safety, Environment and Community, Maryann Wipaki, says Glencore was pleased to provide funding through the Community Assistance Program to help support this project.

“The professional development workshop series has been really well received, from beginners through to the more advanced performers,” says Maryann.

  • The Community Choir performing.

“It’s great to see some up and coming local musicians getting the opportunity to develop their skills.”

“We believe the communities that support our operations should benefit from our activities and Symphony Under the Outback Stars really hit the right notes,” Maryann says.

Glencore proudly supports local events, projects and initiatives across our North Queensland communities of Townsville, Cloncurry, Mount Isa and Camooweal to make them safer, happier, healthier, and more sustainable.
