Kovatera trial for our underground light vehicle fleet

Kovatera light vehicles (LV) are being trialed at Mount Isa Mines to improve reliability, extend life of asset, and reduce downtime and maintenance costs.

It is essential for light vehicles used underground at Mount Isa Mines to be highly durable, with a reliable and effective braking system.

Superintendent Mobile Maintenance Light Fleet, Dave Anderson, says when operating an LV in the underground environment, the standard rear brake system requires maintenance intervention every 14 to 21 days to prevent premature failures.

Kovatera’s fail-safe braking system is a key attribute, as well as the vehicle’s automatic speed-limiting capabilities.

“The internal wet brake system in the Kovatera is a more reliable and efficient system, allowing the business to extend our maintenance strategy and potential life of asset,” Dave says.

There are currently six Kovateras supporting Mount Isa Mines’ operations.

Chassis strength is also vital to ensuring a longer asset life. The Kovatera delivers this with a very sturdy chassis with a five-year/5,000-hour warranty.

“A stronger chassis means a safer vehicle,” Dave says.

The Kovatera LVs have rollover protective structure (ROPS) and falling object protective structure (FOPS) certification for increased safety, which means they can navigate more areas underground compared to other LVs.

Kovatera’s fail-safe braking system and the vehicle’s automatic speed-limiting capabilities are key attributes.

Drivetrain, the supplier, will implement Drivetrain technical and onsite support in Mount Isa.

Drivetrain Technical Manager, Shayne Griffin, says it’s important for Drivetrain to supply parts at a local level.

“Drivetrain is in the process of implementing spare parts and warehousing into Mount Isa for immediate supply and ongoing support,” Shayne says.
