Skyline to change as redundant infrastructure demolished

Mount Isa’s western skyline will soon look different as redundant structures are taken down.

Outmoded components of the Copper Concentrator, the Fine Ore Bin and Transfer Tower are now redundant and planned for demolition to make way for the next life phase of the mine, including the potential Black Star Open Cut (BSOC) project.

These structures have been recognisable features amongst the mine’s infrastructure since they were built in 1972 and represent a significant part of the site’s history and engineering legacy.

Demolition works on the Fine Ore Bin and Transfer Tower are scheduled for the second half of 2026.

Visually prominent from locations across the city, removal of these structures will reshape the composition of the western skyline.

The Surface Engineering Team is working closely with Operations, Maintenance, and project stakeholders to ensure the demolition works are planned and executed safely, with a strong focus on minimising impacts to employees, the community, and surrounding operations.

Mount Isa Mines recognises the important role this infrastructure has played in our operations over many decades, as well as the position they may hold in the hearts of current and previous mine workers and the community at large.

Community members are encouraged to call the community feedback hotline 1800 982 982 should they have any concerns with these demolition activities.

Demolition activities are scheduled to commence in the second half of 2026.
