Glencore proud to be part of AusIMM Life of Mine Conference 2021
Queensland Metals and Glencore Coal Australia had the opportunity to showcase our approach to being a responsible miner and commitment to sustainability and progressive rehabilitation across our Australian operations at the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM) Life of Mine Conference.
Glencore was proud to be the platinum sponsor for the AusIMM Life of Mine 2021 Conference, held in Brisbane in late April, exploring the challenges across the full life cycle of a mine, from exploration to rehabilitation, with a strong focus on sustainable outcomes for the future of the industry.
Over 280 industry representatives from leading mining and resource companies attended the three-day conference, with many additional attendees joining online to engage and hear about Glencore Coal Australia’s and Queensland Metals’ life of mine planning approach and achievements across our New South Wales and Queensland operations.

“Our rehabilitation achievements are among the best in the industry, and it’s a great source of pride for us to be able to share these,” says Jonathan.
“For instance, work is progressing well with the rehabilitation of two former waste rock storage facilities at George Fisher Mine on the Mount Isa Mines lease. Both Handlebar Hill and Magazine waste rock storage facilities were used between 2007 and 2014 for the Handlebar Hill open cut mine.”
“Since we started rehabilitating the sites in 2017 almost six million tonnes of earth has been moved as part of reshaping the waste rock storage facilities and installation of a cover layer of non-acid forming capping material.”

Jonathan says sponsoring events like AusIMM’s Life of Mine Conference provides the opportunity for industry to showcase their achievements in environmental management and rehabilitation, and highlight best practice in life of mine planning.
“These conferences provide an important platform for our people to share their learnings, network and exchange information with fellow mining companies, consultants and academics to encourage sustainable rehabilitation and closure across the industry.”
