Glencore celebrates local success at CUC Mount Isa’s inaugural graduation ceremony

At Glencore, we are proud to support initiatives that empower our community, strengthen local capacity and build brighter futures right here in Mount Isa. One of those standout initiatives is the Country Universities Centre (CUC) Mount Isa, a locally managed study hub that is creating real educational opportunities for regional residents, without requiring them to leave home.

Since its opening in August 2024, CUC Mount Isa has become a vital resource for regional learners, providing a modern, welcoming study space equipped with the technology and support needed to access higher education and training. With funding from the Department of Education’s Regional University Study Hub Program, and additional backing from community partners including Glencore Mount Isa Mines, the Centre has already supported 210 students in their academic journeys.

On Thursday 26 June, we were honoured to witness a landmark moment for our region, the inaugural CUC Mount Isa Graduation Ceremony. The event celebrated the achievements of 30 local students who completed qualifications ranging from Certificates and Diplomas to Bachelor and Doctorate degrees, all while remaining in Mount Isa.

The Centre’s success reflects the shared commitment of local partners, including Glencore Mount Isa Mines, to remove barriers to education and ensure that everyone in our community has the chance to learn, grow, and succeed.

“It was incredibly pleasing to see such a great turnout for CUC Mount Isa's inaugural graduation ceremony,” said Sean Bower, Centre Manager. “We witness first-hand the effort students put in to complete their studies. Some have already enrolled in further study, some have secured employment or promotions—and all have grown in confidence. That’s exactly why we do what we do.”

Chris Pocock, Deputy Chair of CUC Mount Isa, highlighted the importance of the facility,

“The CUC facility is so important to Mount Isa. It gives people the opportunity to complete their studies without having to move. That can be life-changing for families and for our region.”

Among the proud graduates were Richie O'Sullivan and Charlize Ferguson, two individuals whose stories reflect both the resilience of our community and the real-world impact of local education.

Richie, originally from Ireland, moved back to Mount Isa after 15 years in hospitality. He recently completed a Certificate IV in Child, Youth and Family Intervention while working in youth residential care:

“With current staff shortages, fitting in study around work was tough, but I pushed through. I learned so much and I’m grateful to Skills Generation and CUC Mount Isa for their professionalism and support. Having this kind of facility in a rural town is so important.”

Charlize, born and raised in Mount Isa, shared her inspiring journey from a career setback to a thriving role in community services:

“After a shoulder injury ended my electrical apprenticeship, I was lost. Support work reignited my passion, and now I help manage a residential home. Thanks to Skills Generation, ISC, and CUC Mount Isa, I found my path again. This opportunity changed my life.”

These stories, and the 28 others celebrated at the ceremony, are powerful examples of what can happen when local people are given access to the tools and support they need to succeed.

Glencore Mount Isa Mines, is proud to support CUC Mount Isa as part of our broader commitment to community development. From education and training to health, infrastructure, and beyond, we remain focused on initiatives that make a lasting difference in the lives of Mount Isa residents.

Congratulations to the graduates of CUC Mount Isa.
