Mining, mineral processing and the Mount Isa community

For almost 100 years, the success of our Mount Isa Mines operation has been closely linked to the Mount Isa community which supports us.

Our mining and mineral processing complex famously makes up the Mount Isa city landscape, demonstrating the uniqueness of how closely industry and community reside.

It's this proximity that shines a light on our approach to environment and community, ensuring that we have the right systems and processes in place to monitor, manage and minimise any negative impact that our operations may have.

  • From humble beginnings, Mount Isa Mines has successfully coexisted with the local community for close to 100 years.
  • Mount Isa is one of Australia’s most successful mining towns thanks to its location in one of the most mineral rich regions in the world.

The four key areas of our environmental responsibility are: air emissions, land management, water management and waste management. All of this is governed under an Environmental Authority (EA) issued by the Queensland Government's Department of Environment and Science.

Our EA is our environmental licence to operate and outlines the strict environmental conditions, performance targets and stringent reporting requirements that we must meet.

Our 32,000 hectare Mining Lease is governed by over 80 separate permits and authorities to protect and minimise impacts to the environment.

Our people and their families live locally and call Mount Isa home so the wellbeing of the community and operating responsibly will always be our priority.

  • Mount Isa has the most intensive air quality monitoring of any city in Australia to monitor, manage and minimise emission impacts to the community.
  • Our teams of specialised environmental professionals conduct regular monitoring and management activities, such as dust monitoring which is just one way we work to ensure we’re compliant with our environmental licence.

We have teams of highly specialised environmental professionals that conduct daily monitoring and management activities as well as ensuring the success of significant investment initiatives to improve our environmental performance.

In the following mining, mineral processing and the Mount Isa community series, Resourceful will take a closer look at the ways we manage and minimise our air emissions and highlight our environmental approach and initiatives that contribute to the responsible operation of our mines.
