Glencore’s local employment pathway continues to deliver

Each year Glencore’s School Leaver Pathway Program provides an exciting opportunity for local year 12 graduates to explore a variety of entry level roles in the mining and resource industry.

The program was introduced in 2015 to assist school leavers overcome the challenges associated with competing for operations and labour-based roles within our business directly out of secondary school.

  • Tara Bailey spent time working as an Administrative Assistant at George Fisher Mine and Lady Loretta Mine.
  • Junior Administration Officer, Bree Waerea, had the opportunity to work in Occupational Hygiene in the Health, Safety, Environment and Community team.

Glencore Queensland Metals Human Resources Group Manager Clint Milner says the program continues to support school leavers to get a foot in the door at our operations.

“This year 26 school leavers joined Glencore across our Mount Isa Mines and Ernest Henry Mining assets,” says Clint.

“They worked in administrative, technical and operational roles across a broad spectrum of business areas from communications and engagement, occupational hygiene, training, planning and engineering.”

“The program was created to help assist secondary school graduates in deciding what path they want to go down once completing the program, leaving them well equipped to apply for continued employment or explore other career opportunities.”

Junior Administration Officer, Claire Smith, calling in to a pre-start work meeting as part of COVID-19 safety measures.

“We offer three, six or 12 month contracts depending on the particular role providing successful participants a pathway into the business, while also giving them a chance to work full-time and get real-world experience,” Clint says.

For some school leavers it’s the first step towards a rewarding career with Glencore, while for others it’s a pathway to university study or a career in a completely different industry.

School Leaver Claire Smith who worked as a Junior Administration Officer in the Communications and Engagement team at Mount Isa Mines says the program helped her learn a multitude of new skills that are beneficial for any workplace.

  • Naomi Spitzner-Lewis had the opportunity to work at an Administration Assistance in Human Resources at George Fisher Mine.
  • Junior Administration Officer, Elyse Doherty, spent time in the Communications and Engagement team. She also gained work experience at the Concentrator at Ernest Henry Mining.

“It’s really boosted my confidence in terms of working as part of a team,” says Claire.

While this experience has increased Claire’s interest in the resource industry, she has decided to pursue university studies in psychology next year before embarking on a career in that field.

“Once I finish my studies I hope to one day come back and apply what I’ve learnt providing mental health support to those working in the mining sector,” Claire says.

  • Gabby Cooper-Stevenson worked in the Training team at George Fisher Mine.
  • Reece Hilton gained experience in the Technical Services team at Mount Isa Copper Operations.

In 2021, Glencore Queensland Metals will take on another round of school leavers to continue this fantastic program. If you are graduating, or know someone graduating in 2021 and are unsure on where you want to go post-high school we encourage you to check out our School Leaver Program.
