Last Friday, Mount Isa Mines took out the Large Employer of the Year category at the 2019 North Queensland Regional Training Awards held in Townsville.

Mount Isa Mines was recognised for its dedication and commitment to developing and fostering the capacity of its workforce.

Matt O’Neill, Chief Operating Officer, Glencore North Queensland Copper Assets said training helps to cultivate a learning culture across our operations, a key factor in the sustainability and resilience of our business.

“We have a team of dedicated training professionals who make a valuable contribution to designing, implementing and improving the education and training programs for our people, while working hand in hand with our operational teams to ensure this is achieved,” Mr O’Neill said.

”We invest millions each year to provide relevant, comprehensive training packages for our employees and contractors.

“We consider the training requirements of our people throughout the lifecycle of our activities starting with our career pathway opportunities, on-boarding process, mandatory and task specific training and continued professional and personal development.”

Mount Isa Mines eLearning Management System offers a flexible, convenient approach to training, this has seen the development of online courses and paperless assessments, reducing in-classroom time through the use of modern technology.

Successful employment pathways programs introduce students to mining careers from as early as Year 9 through our partnership with the Queensland Minerals and Energy Academy, and Years 11 and 12 through work experience.
Greg Ashe, Chief Operating Officer Zinc Assets Australia said through structured training and development we are committed to realising the full potential of our people.

“Sponsored education programs like the School Leavers, Graduate, Indigenous Employment and Apprenticeship programs provide training opportunities and an invaluable foot-in-the-door to the mining sector,” Mr Ashe said.

“With such a diverse business and workforce, training is an investment and tailoring our programs to suit the needs of business and our employees within a broad range of operational areas is essential.

“In 2017, the Tim Underhill Diversity Scholarship in Mine Surveying was posthumously created in honour of a George Fisher Mine Senior Mine Surveyor for Mount Isa Mines Zinc Assets which specifically targets female students to promote gender diversity in the mining industry.”

Mount Isa Mines will represent the north Queensland region at the 2019 Queensland Training Award state titles to be held in Brisbane on 14 September.
