Matt Body from Glencore’s Mount Is a Mines has been named joint winner of the 2023 Exceptional Indigenous Person in Queensland Resources Award at the Queensland Resources Council (QRC) Indigenous Awards in Brisbane last night. Matt shares the accolade with Danielle Kyle of South32.

The proud Kalkadoon man and Metallurgical Plant Technical Operator at the copper smelter has been working at Mount Isa Mines for 17 years, starting his career on the tapping floor where molten copper can reach temperatures of about 1,200 degrees Celsius.

The award recognises his leadership and dedication to team safety initiatives and key projects, like the copper smelter rebrick in 2022.

Matt, a father of five, hopes to inspire the next generation to follow a similar path, to become the best versions of themselves and consider a career in the mining industry.

“Glencore provides a range of options and entry pathways, such as the Indigenous Employment Program, for Indigenous people to get into the resources industry and kickstart their careers. The company also provides ongoing training and that’s how I have progressed and got to where I am today,” he said.

Sam Strohmayr, head of Glencore’s zinc business in Australia, has congratulated Matt on his significant and important contribution to the processing area of the business over many years.

“This is great recognition for Matt’s hard work, perseverance and dedication”, he said. “Since he began with us in 2005, he has advanced his career and we are proud of the many accomplishments he has achieved.”
