Glencore welcomed the Prime Minister, The Hon Anthony Albanese MP, at Mount Isa Mines (MIM) as part of a mine site visit today.

MIM is one of Australia’s most iconic zinc and copper mining operations and is also home to the only copper smelter and refinery in Queensland.

Glencore is one of Australia’s largest producers of metals and minerals including zinc, copper, cobalt and nickel, which will all be needed to facilitate the global transition to a net zero future.

“We were delighted to host the Prime Minister and pleased that he was able to take time to visit our zinc operations”, said Sam Strohmayr, head of Glencore’s zinc and copper business in Australia.  “We were also grateful to have the opportunity to discuss the increasing importance of metals and minerals in Australia and the contribution our operations make to the region.”

Last year, Glencore’s Queensland metals business employed 4,450 people and contributed A$2.4 billion to the economy, including A$1.7 billion spent on goods and services, working with around 2,130 suppliers.

“Mount Isa is one of Australia’s most successful mining towns and this is in large part to the support we get from the community”, said Mr Strohmayr.
