Glencore commits A$2 million to new Miners’ Memorial

Glencore will contribute A$2 million towards the construction of the Mount Isa Mine Workers Memorial, creating a permanent place to honour the men and women who have lost their lives in mining-related incidents at Mount Isa Mines.
Mount Isa City Council is leading the development of the memorial at Frank Aston Hill, following planning and consultation with a dedicated memorial committee. The Queensland Government has also committed A$2 million to the project.
The memorial will provide a place for families, colleagues and the wider community to reflect on the lives lost and recognise the contribution generations of miners have made to Mount Isa.
Maryann Wipaki, General Manager Health, Safety, Environment and Community for Glencore Metals Australia, said the memorial would preserve an important part of the city’s history.
“Mining has shaped Mount Isa for more than a century, but that history also includes the tragic loss of people whose contribution to our industry and community must never be forgotten,” Ms Wipaki said.
“Over many decades the approach to health and safety has evolved considerably from manual labour to mechanisation to automation, and we’ve needed to adapt accordingly.
“While the improvement in our safety performance over the years is positive, our job is never done, we come to work striving to do better each and every day.
“Glencore’s A$2 million contribution will help create a permanent tribute where people can remember and pay their respects.
“The memorial will also serve as a powerful reminder of our responsibility to continually improve safety and protect every person who works in our industry.”
