Queensland Indigenous Pathways Employment Program graduates 14 participants
Media statement
Brisbane, Australia
Glencore is pleased to announce 14 participants have graduated from our 2021 Indigenous Pathways Employment Program in Queensland.
We can also confirm 13 have already secured employment.
The purpose of the program is to provide employment opportunities for Indigenous Australians who live on, or have connection to the areas within which Glencore Coal operates in Queensland.
The 26-week program was based in two hubs in proximity to Glencore sites:
- Glenden (Collinsville, Newlands and Hail Creek), and
- Tieri (Clermont, Oaky Creek and Rolleston).
“This is our third year running the program,” Program Manager Mr Brian French said.
“Every year we try to provide an improved opportunity for the participants to be supported and gain valuable experience to assist them in securing employment within the resources sector or with one of our suppliers.
“It’s a great outcome in 2021 to have had 11 participants secure onsite work opportunities, with two others securing employment elsewhere.
“I’m proud of all those involved. We’ve been able to establish a pathway to genuine employment and connect Indigenous people back to country as well.”
The program involves two phases: phase one focuses on mine inductions and medicals along with lifestyle training.
After this, participants undertake training in interviews and resume building to gain the capabilities and confidence needed to tackle the roles they are assigned when they move into real work experience in phase two.
These roles varied from underground mining, operators, warehouse assistants, trades assistants to bench support.
“Phase 2 is effectively a 14-week job interview,” Mr French explained.
“We’re looking at attitude and performance over that period and while there’s no guarantee for employment, there’s genuine opportunity given the skills each participant has achieved.
“This year we’ve been very successful in candidates securing positions and our hope is that their commitment to working through the program to achieve their goals will inspire others in their respective communities.”

About Glencore Australia
In Australia, Glencore produces coal, copper, cobalt, nickel, zinc, lead, silver and gold from 26 mining operations. We also operate metals processing assets in Queensland, New South Wales, Western Australia and the Northern Territory, including metals smelters, concentrators and refineries.
