Glencore’s Integra Underground Mine to cease operations in 2022

Media statement

Glencore has commenced discussions with the workforce at its Integra underground coal mine in relation to ceasing coal production in 2022.

This is an estimated 12 months earlier than the original scheduled life of mine plan.

In 2019 the Integra coal mine, located in the NSW Upper Hunter region, produced 1.7 million tonnes of saleable metallurgical coal and currently supports a workforce of 277 people.

Options to further develop the mine were investigated but a combination of economic and market factors do not support continued operations.

Some development activity at the mine will be reduced in the near term, resulting in a small reduction in employee numbers. The workforce will continue to reduce through to the final completion of mining in 2022.

“This is disappointing news for our employees but we are focused on giving our people as much notice as possible.  We will have support services in place for all our workers as we appreciate the impact this will have on them and their families,” a Glencore spokesperson said.

Glencore will consider voluntary redundancies as part of the consultation process.
