Glencore launches Indigenous Pathways Program in Upper Hunter

Media statement

Glencore has announced plans for an Indigenous Employment Pathways Program in its New South Wales Upper Hunter coal operations, in conjunction with JobTrail, the Indigenous services division of the WorkPac Group.

Commencing in April, the Pathways Program aims to provide employment opportunities for Indigenous Australians who live in or have connections to the land close to Glencore coal operations.

It builds on a successful pilot Pathways Program conducted in Queensland in 2019, which resulted in most participants finding employment at the end of the program.

“The Pathways Program provides opportunities for Aboriginal people actively seeking employment,” says Tim Walls, Approvals and Cultural Heritage Manager for Glencore Coal in New South Wales.

“The Program will be based around the Muswellbrook and Singleton towns, and we will be working with Aboriginal people living in, or with close connections to, these areas.

“As has been the case in our Queensland operations, the Pathways Program in the Upper Hunter has been guided by feedback from local Aboriginal groups and aims to address a need within these communities.”

The successful applicants will participate in a 26-week training and work experience program.

In Phase 1, they will complete a Certificate II in Surface Extraction, delivered by selected Registered Training Organisations.

In Phase 2, they will undertake paid work experience and further training as identified with each participant, facilitated across various Glencore sites or other potential employers in the Upper Hunter.

Participants will be supported by trained mentors at each site, further improving their understanding of what is required to secure employment with Glencore or other employers.
