Media release

Glencore’s latest economic contribution report shows we spent $19.6 billion across our Australian operations last year.

As one of Australia’s largest producers of coal and critical minerals, Glencore operates 20 mines across Queensland, New South Wales, Northern Territory and Western Australia, as well as several metals processing facilities including concentrators, smelters and refineries.

At a time of global uncertainty, high domestic energy costs and ongoing cost-of-living pressures, Australia’s resources sector continues to provide jobs, support communities and regional businesses and contribute significant taxes and royalties to federal, state and territory governments.

Glencore has been operating in Australia for decades and is proud that our business continues to make a significant contribution to the national economy.

The 2024 economic report highlights include:

  • Providing jobs for 17,420 employees and contractors
  • Spending $13.2 billion on goods and services
  • Working with 6,810 Australian-based businesses
  • Paying $2.5 billion in wages and salaries
  • Paying $3.6 billion in taxes, royalties, and rates to governments

“Glencore believes that mining matters for all Australians”, said Cass McCarthy, head of corporate affairs for Glencore in Australia. “We are proud of the contribution our business makes because directly and indirectly – mining helps the prosperity of all Australians”

“We want to thank our Australian workforce who are key to our success and our ability to make a positive difference across both metro and regional Australia”, said Ms McCarthy.

The wide variety of businesses that Glencore supports ranges from the local coffee shop to the country’s leading equipment and mining service providers.

“While we make a significant economic contribution in places like the Hunter Valley, Mount Isa, Bowen Basin, Roper Gulf in the Northern Territory and Western Australia Goldfields we also make an important contribution in cities like Brisbane, Sydney, Perth and Darwin”, said Ms McCarthy.
