Meet Bonita: Breaking barriers and turning wrenches
Growing up in the Northern Territory in a household of mechanics, it was only natural for Botina to follow a similar path.
“I grew up around my parents fixing cars and I decided one day, that’s something I will follow,” says Bonita.
A Light Vehicle Mechanic at McArthur River Mine (MRM) in the Northern Territory, Bonita joined MRM in her second year as an automotive mechanical apprentice.
Her dedication and talent quickly set her apart.
She has since completed her apprenticeship, spent 12 months in a mobile maintenance planning role, and is now back on the tools doing what she loves most — hands-on mechanical work.
“To make sure that everything runs smoothly, we need to make sure we are efficient as a department,” explains Bonita.
When asked what her advice would be to anyone considering a career in mining, she couldn’t recommend it enough. She finds the work she does very rewarding.
“If you like a challenge, mining is 100% the industry for you,” says Bonita.
“Every day is a challenge but in the best way possible. You are learning something new every single day.”
Diversity at MRM: The Bigger Picture
Did you know that women make up 22% of MRM's workforce?
A large part of our female workforce is spread across trades, technical and management roles.
The operation is focused on creating pathways for women to enter, grow, and lead in the mining industry.
Bonita represents what’s possible when opportunity meets determination — and we're excited to see her continue to lead by example.
