From steel caps to riding boots: Mount Isa Mines’ hometown cowboy

By day, Jamie’s a Supervisor at the Mount Isa Mines Power Station, where he’s spent more than 15 years.

But when rodeo week rolls around each year in the first weekend of August, you’ll find him trading his steel caps for riding boots, and stepping into the saddle as one of Mount Isa’s own hometown cowboys.

There are few events in Australia that capture the heart of a community quite like the Mount Isa Mines Rodeo.

More than just a rodeo, it’s a celebration of outback resilience, a gathering of generations and a proud tradition that showcases the spirit of Mount Isa to the world.

Jamie’s rodeo journey began back in school, where his love of horses - and a few older mates who rode bulls and broncs - ignited the spark. It wasn’t long before he was hooked.

Jamie said the adrenaline rush keeps him coming back but it’s the great family and friends he’s made over the years that really make it special.

He’s been a long-time rodeo competitor since a good mate introduced him to steer wrestling, and from there he expanded into team roping, calf roping, and working as a pickup man.

One of his favourite memories is making the team roping finals at the Mount Isa Mines Rodeo with his nephew, who was still a junior at the time.

“We won enough for him to take home the local all-round cowboy buckle. That was pretty special,” Jamie said.

You can catch Jamie in action at the Mount Isa Mines Rodeo on 7-9 August at Buchanan Park, Mount Isa.

Glencore is honoured to once again stand as foundation rights sponsor for this legendary event, continuing a 67-year legacy partnership that reflects our deep roots in the region and our unwavering commitment to the people who call Mount Isa home.
