After decades working beneath the surface, Peter Ostermann, Glencore Coal Australia’s Director of Underground Operations, has heard just about every question there is about underground mining.
From the technology used underground to how air and water are managed, Peter answers some of the industry’s most frequently asked, and unexpected, questions in our new video series, 'Digging Into'.
Peter has a long association with underground mining at Glencore. His career began 26 years ago as an Operator Graduate at Oaky No1 in central Queensland and has since taken him through a range of operational and technical roles across New South Wales coal mines.
Along the way, he worked on the development of Australia’s first wide longwall at Ulan, later becoming General Manager of the Ulan Complex before taking on his current role overseeing Glencore’s underground coal operations across New South Wales and Queensland.
Speaking about the challenges and opportunities of underground mining, Peter says.
“All underground mines have their own unique issues that they’ll deal with, and its all from working within the natural environment. So whether it be strata, gas or water, it’s an extraordinary environment that we get to work in.”
