Glencore is assessing the potential for the Valeria coal resource to be developed into an open cut coal operation.

We will continue to assess the project’s timing against the global coal market and our overall portfolio. Any future coal produced from the Valeria resource would be managed within the coal production cap announced by Glencore in February 2019.

Glencore will consult with key stakeholders and will look to address stakeholder feedback in the final project design and implementation. We continue to engage openly and regularly with the Central Highlands community and Government agencies and provide updates of developments.

Project description – Valeria

The Valeria Project consists of a Mining Lease Application (MLA) and accompanying Environmental Authority (EA) application, submitted in October 2019, by Joint Venture entities:

  • Valeria Coal Holdings Pty Limited (a Glencore subsidiary);
  • Leichhardt Coal Pty Limited;
  • J-Power Australia Pty Ltd; and
  • J.C.D. Australia Pty Ltd.

The Valeria Project MLA will enable Glencore to begin assessing options for a coal operation at Valeria that will help determine the broader development of the overall Valeria coal resource. We are proposing to develop a project with a production rate of up to 18 million tonnes of run of mine coal per annum from Year 5.

The Valeria Project will require a full Environmental Impact Statement and a Social Impact Assessment under the Queensland Government’s Strong and Sustainable Resource Communities Act 2017.

Project description – Valeria South

The Valeria South Project consists of two MLAs and accompanying EA application, submitted by Valeria South Coal Pty Ltd (a Glencore subsidiary) in March 2019.

The Valeria South Project MLAs will enable Glencore to begin assessing options for a coal operation at Valeria South that will help determine the broader development of the overall Valeria coal resource. We are proposing to develop a project with a production rate of up to 2.5 million tonnes of run of mine coal per annum over a period of approximately seven years.

The Valeria South Project will require a full Environmental Impact Statement and a Social Impact Assessment under the Queensland Government’s Strong and Sustainable Resource Communities Act 2017.
